Demand for Australian University places increases.
206,099 people have applied to study at public universities in 2007. This represents a 1.8% nationwide increase in demand from last year. South Australian and Northern Territory Universities experienced a 4.2% increase in demand for their courses.
This rise in demand for a university education demonstrates that Australian’s from all socioeconomic still highly value a university degree. This is despite the Howard Governments ideological attacks on equitable higher education. Since taking office John Howard’s government has enacted legislation that has raised the cost of course textbooks, Increased the HECS-HELP fees by 25% and damaged the ability of student organisation to deliver student services. Attacks have ensure that in previous year the demand for higher education has decreased as prospective students see university education as unaffordable. |
