What is the best subject to pick as an English elective??
«

Hi
Has anyone here ever done any of the following topics.
Imagined Worlds: Approaches to Literature (ENGL1003)
Writing Nation: Australian Writing for Contemporary Audiences (ENGL1004)
Short Stories and Their Writers (ENGL1007)
Fictions and Transformations (ENGL1008)
I want to do the 6 unit version of one of these English subjects as an elective next year but I don’t know anyone who has done these subjects and can tell me which one is best. Any ideas… anyone.
Thanks

I have to do one 6 unit elective in both 1st and 2nd semester but I only want to do one English elective.
I find the description of “ENGL1004A Writing Nation: Australian Writing for Contemporary Audiences” appealing.

can anyone comment

I have done Imagined Worlds and I found it hard because I personally could not get through the texts in time because I was lazy. However, I think it's a great topic. It's a good introduction to studying English texts and I think the workshops provide great opportunities to discuss them with other readers and get more insight. I recommend it. (I did the 4.5 unit version though.)
I wish I had done Short Stories and their Writers, or more to the point, I wish I had done it as an elective instead of doing that stupid sociology topic I did in second semester. As far as I know it introduces you to the different ways of writing (little old me calls them point-of-view s) and you get to do some writing yourself and also analyse other people's short stories. If you're interested in creative writing I'd suggest it would be a good choice.
The other two I don't know anything about. Sorry. Maybe someone else can step in and tell you about those.

I did "Imagined Worlds" and "Fictions and Transformations"
If you're really into literature, Imagined Worlds is the way to go. It's a love-it-or-hate-it topic depending on what your attitudes towards 18th to 19th century literature is. I personally loved it because I adore literature, but then again I love Shakespeare and I know plenty of people who'd like to travel back in time and kick him in the nads. 18th-19th century literature can be pretty challenging due to the differences in language but that could either be seen as "really hard" or "a challenge". They usually gave us two weeks to read the books which I thought was good considering all the other stuff I had to read for my other subjects. The standard stuff for Imagined Worlds were books like Pride and Prejudice, Heart of Darkness and Dr Jekkyl and Mr Hyde.
Fictions and Transformations is all about old stuff and how it's been transformed into a seperate text. Again, whether you enjoy it or not depends on your taste in literature. Unlike Imagined Worlds, they only gave us a week to read each text regardless of the length, which I thought sucked. We had to read some stuff that had extremely medieval english and normally I'd find it challenging and interesting, but due to the short time allocated to read the texts I just found it hard and stressful, especially since I had three other subject readers from other subjects to get through as well. I didn't like the texts as much as in Imagined Worlds, but that's just me. One of my friends really enjoyed it. The standard stuff for Fictions and Transformations were books like "Jane Eyre", "An Imaginary Life", and feminist poetry responding to greek myths.

I must say I would like nothing more than to do this.
Not because I have anything against the guy, nor because I think he is a terrible writer. But merely to repay a few hundred years of the sufferings of school pupils. I mean why couldn’t he have written a few easier pieces so that when teachers said, “you can pick any Shakespeare piece to study” you could bring out “Othello and the giant peach” or “Macbeth’s marvellous medicine” .
