Need Advice!!!
«

Hi everyone,
Needing a bit of help and I am hoping that someone with a bit more experience could give me a few pointers.
I got a pretty bad mark for an essay I handed up(F) last week, I don’t normally get bad marks, I average D’s. Now the tutor who marked the essay didn’t put any comments on the essay or tell me why they failed it. So I took the essay along to the Student Learning centre drop in and showed it and the essay question to the tutor there. The tutor said they thought I shouldn’t have failed the essay in their opinion.
So my question is, “What rights do I have to contest the mark I was given?”
Thanks for any help

Your first step should be to go back to your tutor and ask them to explain the mark to you. For an F you deserve a detailed explanation of why you failed and how you can avoid it in the future.

If you have no success there, I believe there are avenues you can pursue with the Student Appeals Committee if you are interested in taking it further, which can be found through the current students page

It is important to see you tutor first about it. It is always possible that they made a mistake when marking your paper. It seems unusual that they would mark it as fail without commenting on why.
Also I would suggest that you go to the course coordinator before going to the Student Appeals Committee.

Also, in your Statement of Assessment Methods it might say whether you can re-submit a failed piece or not.

Hey,
Sorry I haven’t replied earlier. Bit rude not to tell you how it went.
I went and saw my tutor and they agree to take a second look at my essay. The next week they gave it back to me with a much better mark and a profuse apology, apparently they had stuffed up.
The moral of the story is, you shouldn’t be afraid to question stuff with tutors, they do make mistakes.
Thanks for the advice peeps.
