I based my comments re nuclear power plants being potential targets for "terrorists" on this article in Sydney Morning Herald Jan 6th 2007
" STOLEN Australian Army rocket launchers are in the hands of a home-grown terrorist group which planned to use them to attack Sydney's Lucas Heights nuclear reactor, police allege."
http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/stolen-launchers-target-nplant/2007/01/05/1167777281891.html
Personally i think leading up to election this type of fear mongering will increase.
I did not mean to imply chernobyl disaster was because of terrorists, that was because of poor upkeep and bad practices eg ignoring safety protocols... I was trying to raise the point of the effects are still being felt in the area with health problems etc (although there are many people trying to play down this )
My question is who will ensure that everyone will adhere to all safety protocols anyway.
And I am still concerned about the waste, I have not been able to find a viable way of storing and disposing of this.
And is the cost really viable??? Factoring the cost of mining and transporting, building plants, maintaining the plants and infrastrucure, security and manning these power stations, and the storage and disposable of the waste. Plus the research and monitoring required to ensure safety protocols are maintained...
As to the chooks main reason being for the eggs, recycling kitchen scraps and hopefully bug control...!!
Maybe one day I will be selling free range organic eggs on here!!! LOL
::)Oh my gosh I am sounding greener and greener

If the picture in that article of the rocket launcher is actually similar to what the people had, then I'd say their attack was doomed to failure, unless they planned to just make a hole in the hall or take out someone's car in the carpark. No way could that penetrate to anything critical enough to make the place go critical. At worst, minor damage that requires the place to be shut down for repairs for a few weeks.
As for Chernobyl, I'll say again that it's ONE event at ONE nuclear station out of hundreds in the world. The risk to you is and will be negligible.

There is still the problem of establishing safe waste disposal facilities and transporting the safely to the location.

Took me a while to find your reply, hidden as it was inside the quote of my own post :p
Disposal of the waste by burying it deep inside a geologically stable rock formation would, imho, be suitable. Just needs to be somewhere that won't be prone to earthquakes, and that will be non-porous so groundwater can't get to the waste. Drill a hole, put the waste in, maybe backfill and seal it up with concrete when and if it's abandoned.
Transporting shouldn't present a huge problem either, just wrap it up in lead and load it onto a truck or train. Before anyone says "what happens if it crashes", it will be less dangerous than for example a petrol tanker crahsing and spilling its load, or a tanker full of sulfuric acid crashing and spilling. Nuclear waste from a power station will be solid, so there's practically no risk of it being dispersed into the environment in the event of a crash. There is the remote risk of terrorists trying to steal it to make a dirty bomb, but that is negligible.

You clearly know what you are talking about prune. I think I have moved slightly towards accepting nuclear as a possible option.

Prune,
Don't take this as an attack on your position on nuclear energy but here are some questions?
If nuclear is such a great option then why is germany looking to faze it out by 2020?
When a country like Germany which arguably is technically superior to usm is describing Nuclear power as a “relic of the past” should we be really starting down that road?
Clicky clicky

Across Europe the story is the same. Countries are discussing if not planning a nuclear phase-out, yet over here on the other side of the globe we are talking about starting nuclear up. Why?

I couldn't say for certain why Germany and other countries are trying to phase it out, but if I was to hazard a guess I'd say public pressure. That environment minister's speech doesn't really say anything new or informative, it's the same old stuff about increased use of renewable energy sources and the horrors of nuclear waste that you can find nearly anywhere.
Personally, I'm not yet convinced that renewables can cover the baseload electricity requirements without a huge (and I mean huge) investment of money, both into research and capital to set the plants up, and taking up vast tracts of real estate at the same time. I'm in favour of renewables when they make sense, I just don't think we can rely on them exclusively. We will need something to cover the baseload, and to me at the moment it looks like a choice between fossil fuels and nuclear.

I guess it will be interesting to watch Germany and see if they can really have solid baseload without nuclear.

tbh i don't like the thought of explosive toxic nuclear waste lying around.
i still maintain a power source that has no bad effects; wind power and solar; would be the type to go with.
no negative effects; come on guys D:

Where do you get "explosive" and "lying around" from?
