Nuclear Power in Aus?

After reading this thread
http://flindersstudents.com/news/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,27/topic,119.msg924/
I was think about what Nuclear power in Australia. I am a bit undecided about it. I used to think it was a really bad idea but now that the whole climate change thing looks like it might kill us all I have softened towards nuclear.
What does everyone else think, is nuclear still a bad choice or is it a viable alternative to coal?

even with the threat of global warming I think that Nuclear is far too risky. we need to be looking at alternatives such as geothermal, solar, tidal, wind, biomass, and such before we even consider nuclear.

I have also always been a little wary of nuclear but alot of people have been saying that nuclear is the only solution that can provide power all the time. after all the sun doesn't always shine nor the wind blow

I don't think that nuclear power is a golden bullet for climate change.

I know its different to Aus but in Canada about 10-15% of power comes from nuclear power. It seems to work ok-ish

I had heard they were fazing out nuclear power in Canada because the economics don't work.

I am against it but not just because it is uneconomic. Nuclear waste is toxix fro hundred and thousands of years afterwards. There is no way you can guarantee that it can be kept safe for that period of time.

It is also a limited resource, what happens when we use up all the uranium??
We really have to look at using less all around, personally and in industry not trying to replace the energy source, other wise we will be looking at this whole question again in??? years
then there is the whole issue of nuclear plants being targets for "terror" potential for major disaster which will have such long lasting effects look at chernobyl
If each of us changed 10% of our energy usage and increased our self sufficiency I wonder what the effects would be....
I have begun to change things eg light globes, buckets in showers, wash dishes in a bowl and use to water plants, am trying to turn off lights as i leave the room (hmmm i can hear my mum say about time!!) I am keen to get some chooks and am researching what i need, next on the list is to walk to local shops instead of drive!! (this will be hard... especially as it is getting colder and wetter)
well there is my 5c worth!

Uranium is fairly plentiful. As the current reserves get used up, the price increases and other reserves that are harder to extract become profitable too. There should be ample uranium to keep us going until fusion or breeder reactors become a practical reality.
Are nuclear reactors targets for terrorists? It would seem obvious at first, but look at what the targets have been so far. Office buildings, trains, buses, train stations... places where they can kill lots of people very quickly. Out of all the hundreds of nuclear power stations in the world, have any actually been targeted? If they were targeted, would a terrorist attack even damage a nuclear power station enough to cause a meltdown? It seems implausible to me. Then there's the issue that Chernobyl was nothing to do with terrorists. That incident was because of the operators deliberately ignoring safety protocols. Since then, has there ever been a similar event? Three Mile Island is the only one I can think of that even gets close, and that was completely and safely contained, it put no-one at risk.
Having said that, I applaud you for trying to reduce your own consumption of resources. Though I'm curious as to the benefit of chooks. Is it just for the eggs, or to recycle kitchen scraps in the absence of a compost pile?

I get concerned that with nuclear we are creating a future problem. In that the waste is going to be there for a long time.
If you could solve the waste and the economics then I would be a lot closer to agreeing with nuclear.
